SsangYong wins the Technology Innovation Award at the JEC World Composites Show 2016 in Paris

Mar.29.2016

▪ Awarded for the application of CFRP technology at the JEC World Composite Show 2016

▪ Introduced advanced technology to selectively reinforce parts on demand, thereby reduce the number of parts and the cost

▪ Plans to secure next-generation growth momentum by developing advanced material and eco-friendly advanced technology

SsangYong Motor Company (CEO Johng-sik Choi; www.smotor.com/en) announced that the company won the Technology Innovation Award for the tailgate applied with carbon fiber reinforced plastics (EFRP) at the JEC World Composites Show, the world’s largest carbon composite material exhibition.

JEC Show, hosted by JEC—an association of global composite-material companies founded in 1996, is annually held on a regional basis such as Europe, America, and Asia. This year, SsangYong was awarded for the product jointly-developed by the Korea Institute of Carbon Convergence Technology (KCTECH) and the Institute of Textile Technology at RWTH Aachen University in Germany.

This year, SsangYong is awarded for ‘customised non-crimp fiber reinforced technology’, concerning CFRP(Carbon Fiber Reinforced Plastics) technology applying to inside of a tailgate, which is jointly-developed by the Korea Institute of Carbon Convergence Technology (KCTECH) and the Institute of Textile Technology at RWTH Aachen University in Germany.

CFRP, mainly applied to aircrafts, is 10 times stronger while weighs one-fourth compared to steel, has been applied by SsangYong in order to achieve weight-lightening and improved strength as well as reduce no. of parts and cost by using CFRP to parts of inside tailgate where needs to be reinforced.

Earlier, SsangYong won the Technology Innovation Award for its first development of the carbon fiber engine cover in the world at JEC Asia 2014, and continues its efforts to develop and apply advanced material to reduce weight for high fuel efficiency and improve strength of the vehicle.

Suwon Lee, an Executive Managing Director of Vehicle Development Center, commented “This award is meaningful to us as global brands’ R&D on the advanced composite material to increase fuel efficiency and hardness of automobiles is getting intense. SsangYong will constantly develop advanced material such as carbon composite material and eco-friendly advanced technology to obtain next-generation growth momentum.”
