‘Go Different. KG Mobility’ – a new brand slogan adopted to emphasise the company’s future direction

▪ New ethos adopted to becomea proud and respected company as a mobility partner contributing to humanity and society

SsangYong Motor Company has changed its company name to KG Mobility (www.kg-mobility.com)in the first step towards becoming a new generation full mobility business.

SsangYong confirmed the change of its corporate name to KG Mobility at the shareholders meeting held at the company’s headquarters in Pyeongtaek today (March 22nd, 2023), attended by CEO Jeong Yong-Won, executives, employees and shareholders.

The business was founded in January 1954 as the automotive manufacturer, Ha Dong-hwan. With a history going back 70 years, it went on to become Korea’s oldest vehicle producer while also becoming the country’s best-know maker of SUVs. The name changed to Dong-A Motors in 1977, SsangYong Motor in 1988, and now KG Mobility in 2023.

The word ‘mobility’ is not limited to traditional automobile manufacturing and sales, and expresses the development and application of future-oriented technologies such as electrification, autonomous driving and connectivity, and the provision of mobility services based on them.

Looking to the future, KG Mobility plans to focus on new mobility technologies such as EV-dedicated platforms, SDV (software defined vehicles), autonomous vehicles and AI in line with the paradigm shift now impacting the global automobile industry.

To launch this new direction, the company has chosen this month’s Seoul Mobility Show as the platform from which to announce its change to a mobility company, while also showcasing its new electric Torres EVX as well as several new concept vehicles including the KR10, O100 and F100.

Together with the name change, a new brand slogan ‘Go Different. KG Mobility’ has been introduced. While communicating the path of adventure that SsangYong has been pursuing it also indicates the new direction for the future.

SsangYong Motor, which has long been part of Koreas’ automotive manufacturing history, is credited with beginning the era of four-wheel drive vehicles by developing its own technology, and established the reputation as an SUV specialist with a full line of SUVs for the first time in Korea. Now with the name change to KG Mobility, the plan is to become a broader mobility company.

At the same time, KG Mobility is planning to enter a number of new business areas such as warranted used cars and special vehicles.

The Certified Pre-Owned (CPO) business will purchase KG Mobility (SsangYong) brand vehicles that are within 5 years and 100,000kms and sell them as quality used cars that have been thoroughly performance inspected and repaired. After completing the preparations, this new business will be launched in the second half of the year.

In addition, a separate company has been established to promote the manufacturing and sales of special purpose vehicles, as well as enhancing and customising vehicles with bespoke features such as electric side steps and custom deck-tops.

Meanwhile, the business is preparing to announce the KG Mobility Design Contest. Drawing on the heritage of SsangYong as the authentic SUV brand, the intention is to help establish a future design vision to inherit and develop under the new name of KG Mobility. The first round of preliminaries will be held in April from which the finalists will be decided, and the final winners announced in June.

A spokesperson for KG Mobility said, “We have changed our name after 35 years and taken the first step towards developing the business into a future mobility company. By focusing on the design and development of future vehicles utilising new technologies such as EV-dedicated platforms, SDV (software-defined vehicles), autonomous vehicles and AI, the company is really embracing change, and we will grow and develop as a proud and respected future mobility partner.”
